The photograph shows the Hindenburg (LZ 129) still undamaged in flight, on the final leg of its transatlantic delivery flight to Lakehurst, New Jersey. May 6, 1937 was the scheduled arrival day; the airship had previously flown over New York City before setting course for the naval base at Lakehurst. Minutes after the beginning of the mooring maneuver at the mooring mast, the hydrogen-filled vessel caught fire and burned completely in approximately half a minute.
