After the LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire on May 6, 1937 during the mooring maneuver in Lakehurst, New Jersey, the hydrogen-filled airship burned completely in less than a minute and sank to the ground. The still image shows the exposed aluminum framework of the Zeppelin shortly after the impact, while the fire had not yet been extinguished and persons—rescue personnel and eyewitnesses—entered the grounds. 36 of the 97 people aboard perished in the disaster. The accident marked the end of commercial passenger airship travel using rigid airship construction.
