After the LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during the landing maneuver at Lakehurst on May 6, 1937, and sank to the ground within seconds, rescue crews rushed to the site of the disaster. The wreckage of the airship was still burning when the first rescuers arrived. In the catastrophe, 36 of the 97 people on board lost their lives. The event marked the end of commercial passenger airship travel.
