On May 6, 1937, the passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its landing maneuver at the naval air station Lakehurst, New Jersey, and was completely consumed within a very short time. The photograph shows the immediate fire suppression and rescue phase: while the wreckage still stands in flames, emergency personnel are on site with fire hoses. Of the 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives; the disaster sealed the end of commercial passenger airship travel.
