On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its mooring maneuver at the naval base Lakehurst, New Jersey, and burned completely within less than a minute. The still image documents the immediate aftermath of the disaster: the metal framework of the crashed airship lies on the ground, while dense smoke clouds rise and emergency personnel advance to the scene of the accident with vehicles. In the disaster, 36 of the 97 people on board lost their lives; the event sealed the end of commercial passenger airship travel.
