On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its mooring maneuver in Lakehurst, New Jersey, and burned completely within a very short time. The image shows the final phase of the disaster: the metal framework lies on the ground while the fire still burns and dense smoke clouds rise. Rescue personnel and eyewitnesses approach the wreckage. Of the 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives.
