On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its mooring maneuver at Naval Air Station Lakehurst and burned completely in less than a minute. The image documents the immediate disaster phase: the burning framework of the airship sinks to the ground while ground crew and rescue personnel operate in the immediate vicinity. 36 of the 97 people on board perished.
