The photograph shows a tightly packed group of young demonstrators in close-up, Black and white faces immediately adjacent to one another. Many have their mouths open, apparently singing, calling out, or speaking in unison; their gazes are directed in the same direction, presumably toward a stage or speaker. The still image is from the documentation of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963, and belongs in the context of the rally at the Lincoln Memorial. It exemplifies the joint participation of Black and white citizens highlighted in the NARA description at one of the largest demonstrations of the U.S. civil rights movement, which demanded civil rights and employment.
