The photograph shows a densely packed group of demonstrators in close proximity to one another; the gestures and facial expressions of those depicted convey strong tension and emotional engagement. The image was taken in the context of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, in which several hundred thousand people participated on August 28, 1963. Black and white citizens jointly demanded an end to racial segregation as well as equal economic and civil rights.
