The photograph shows a dense gathering of demonstrators of different races in close-up. Several people gaze attentively in one direction—presumably toward the stage at the Lincoln Memorial—while a woman in the center of the image looks directly at the camera. The concentrated, serious expressions on their faces reflect the significance of the moment. The image illustrates the multiracial composition of the participants, which was a central characteristic of the March on Washington.
