The photograph shows a young Black demonstrator carrying a basket full of flowers as she participates in the march procession. Behind her, additional participants crowd together, including young men and women, a man with a camera around his neck, and white supporters. Above the crowd, banners are visible: ‘WE MARCH FOR HIGHER MINIMUM WAGES COVERAGE FOR ALL WORKERS NOW’ as well as a sign demanding an ‘honest investigation of police brutality in Americus, GA.’ The scene is part of the march procession of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963. It illustrates the dual purpose of the rally—civil rights and economic equality—and demonstrates the broad participation of young people in the movement.
