The photograph shows a dense group of young demonstrators, predominantly Black, during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963. In the foreground, women in light-colored clothing call out; in the background, signs are held aloft reading “WE MARCH FOR HIGHER MINIMUM WAGES – COVERAGE FOR ALL WORKERS NOW!” and “WE DEMAND VOTING RIGHTS NOW!” The slogans point to the dual objective of the march: civil rights equality and economic participation, particularly a minimum wage and the inclusion of all workers under its protection. The photograph documents the broad participation of young activists in the major demonstration, which is regarded as the pinnacle of the U.S. civil rights movement and culminated in Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech at the Lincoln Memorial.
