The photograph shows two men in suits wearing badges at the head of a march, surrounded by a dense crowd. In the background, numerous banners from the March on Washington are visible, including “March for Jobs for All Now!”, “We March for Integrated Schools Now!”, “We Demand” as well as “UAW Says End Segregated Rules” and signs from the I.U.E. union. The image documents the procession on August 28, 1963, which led to the Lincoln Memorial. The signs illustrate the central demands of the march: civil rights, voting rights, an end to racial segregation in education, as well as jobs and fair wages. The photograph also demonstrates the participation of labor unions in the civil rights movement, which supported the march organizationally and politically.
