The photograph shows an elderly Black man in close-up: he wears a light straw hat, horn-rimmed glasses, a jacket and tie, and gazes intently in a direction away from the camera. In the background, additional demonstrators are visible, including both Black and white participants. The summer clothing and tree-lined setting indicate an outdoor location, presumably along the demonstration route or on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The careful dress of many participants in the March on Washington served as a deliberate message: dignity and seriousness toward the public and political institutions. The image exemplifies the broad, intergenerational participation in the major demonstration that demanded civil rights and employment for the Black population of the United States.
