Amid the densely packed crowd at the March on Washington, a child sitting on an adult’s shoulders raises his arms and a hat jubilantly into the air. On the left side of the image, a banner reading “ALL DC WANTS TO VOTE! HOME RULE FOR D.C.” is visible, pointing to the particular political situation of the federal district, whose residents at that time had no voting rights in presidential elections. Other demonstrators wear buttons and signs, including another partially visible banner. The image documents the broad social participation in the March, which, alongside nationwide civil rights demands, made local demands for democratic participation visible. The exuberant gesture of the child exemplifies the hopeful atmosphere of the day as described by contemporaries.
