The photograph shows a densely packed crowd of people during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963. Numerous hand-painted and printed signs are visible, including ‘WE MARCH’, ‘FREEDOM NOW – THE TIME IS NOW’, ‘FOR FREEDOM IS FOR EVERYBODY’, ‘END BIAS’ as well as group identifications such as ‘CAMP MINISINK’ and ‘INDIANA METHODISTS’. The participants – Black and white women and men, many in summer clothing with hats and sunglasses – stand shoulder to shoulder and attest to the broad social and church participation in the demonstration. The image documents the peaceful character and organized leadership of the massive rally, at which demands for civil rights and jobs were central. As part of the events surrounding the rally at the Lincoln Memorial, the photograph exemplifies a pivotal moment in the United States civil rights movement.
