The photograph shows a densely packed section of the crowd at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963. Numerous banners display the central demands of the demonstration: the abolition of Jim Crow laws, the establishment of integrated schools, adequate housing, and jobs and civil rights for all Americans. The UAW banner (‘UAW Says Jobs and Freedom for Every American’) documents the participation of labor unions in the coalition of the civil rights and labor movements. Several identical ‘Camp Minisink’ signs indicate an organized group that had traveled together. The image illustrates the broad, racially mixed participation and the organized diversity of demands that characterized the march.
