The black-and-white photograph shows two police officers in summer uniforms—one Black and one white officer—standing closely surrounded by demonstrators. In the background, additional participants and scattered signs are visible; trees indicate an outdoor area of the National Mall. The calm posture of the officers and the absence of visible signs of conflict suggest an orderly security presence. Extensive order and security measures had been prepared for the March on Washington, in which officers of different backgrounds participated. The image documents the organized, peaceful execution of one of the largest demonstrations of the U.S. civil rights movement.
