The photograph shows a woman in a light-colored hat at a microphone podium on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the rally on August 28, 1963. In the background, the seated Lincoln statue is clearly visible, definitively identifying the location as the Lincoln Memorial. The steps and the immediate area in front of the podium are densely packed with participants, including men and women of different races as well as identifiable police officers in white helmets. The composition of the crowd reflects the broad, interracial participation that characterized the March on Washington. The rally at the Lincoln Memorial formed the conclusion and culmination of the march, at which speakers publicly articulated the demands of the civil rights movement for equal rights and economic justice.
