The still image shows a woman wearing a wide straw hat, singing with closed eyes at a lectern equipped with multiple microphones. According to the image title and the context of the rally at the Lincoln Memorial, this is Marian Anderson, the internationally renowned concert singer. Anderson had already performed at the Lincoln Memorial before a large audience in 1939, after being denied a performance in a hall shaped by racial segregation; her return appearance at the March on Washington in 1963 deliberately referenced this historical precedent. A uniformed person is visible on the left side of the image, and other rally attendees stand densely packed behind the singer. The scene exemplifies the connection between cultural expression and civil protest that characterized the March on Washington as a demand for civil rights and equal treatment.
