The photograph shows the marketplace of Rothenburg ob der Tauber with its characteristic medieval architecture: on the left a gabled house with a polygonal oriel window, on the right a row of steep-gabled burgher houses as well as the town hall. In the middle distance of the image, the market fountain is visible, around which numerous pedestrians move. The scene conveys the lively everyday life in the central square of the well-preserved imperial city. In the 1937 travel film, Rothenburg ob der Tauber exemplifies the medieval urban culture of Franconia and formed a station on the journey through Germany after Frankfurt am Main.
