In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany. During the visit, Kennedy and Chancellor Konrad Adenauer were received by large crowds during joint motorcades. The trip took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the Berlin Wall constructed in 1961, and was intended to reaffirm the transatlantic alliance between the United States and the Federal Republic.
