During his visit to Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy was received by large crowds. The photograph shows a densely packed, enthusiastically responding population along the route of a motorcade. Such scenes repeated themselves at several stations of the journey, which took Kennedy through Cologne, Bonn, Frankfurt am Main, and finally West Berlin. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall two years earlier.
