During his visit to Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy attended numerous official receptions. The photograph shows Kennedy on a balcony where an official wearing a chain of office presents him with an open book – presumably a Golden Book. Such entries in municipal honor books were part of the official protocol at the stations of his journey through the Federal Republic of Germany.
