In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. The photograph shows Kennedy at a lectern on a balcony, surrounded by members of his delegation and German officials. Such balcony appearances were characteristic of the visit, during which Kennedy spoke publicly to large crowds at several locations. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and served to reaffirm the transatlantic partnership.
