During U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany in June 1963, dense crowds lined the streets in many places. The clearly visible banner ‘Self-determination for all Germans’ points to the political mood in divided Germany two years after the construction of the Wall. Kennedy’s journey through the Federal Republic and West Berlin was, against the backdrop of the Cold War, a powerful symbol of transatlantic solidarity.
