In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany; a central element of the visit were motorcades through city centers, during which Kennedy was received by cheering crowds. The photograph shows Kennedy together with an older companion in an open vehicle, surrounded by densely packed spectators. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the wall in 1961, and was regarded as an important political signal of American solidarity with the Federal Republic.
