In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany. The photograph shows a motorcade in which Kennedy, standing in an open vehicle, greets the crowd. Such vehicle convoys through densely packed crowds characterized the entire visit to Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and served to reaffirm the transatlantic alliance two years after the construction of the Berlin Wall.
