In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany. The journey took him from June 23 to 26 through several cities, accompanied by leading German politicians. Kennedy’s appearances were accompanied by extraordinary public turnout; motorcades through densely lined streets were among the defining images of the visit. The background of the visit was the Cold War and the Berlin Wall, which had existed since 1961, which made the German-American alliance particularly symbolic.
