In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy traveled through the Federal Republic of Germany; he was accompanied, among others, by Chancellor Konrad Adenauer. At several stops on the journey, motorcades passed through jubilant crowds. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the wall in 1961, and was intended to underscore the commitment of the United States to the security of West Germany and West Berlin.
