In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany. The journey took him through several cities, accompanied by large crowds. Characteristic of the visit were motorcades through densely lined streets, during which Kennedy stood in the open vehicle and greeted the crowds. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and was intended to reaffirm transatlantic solidarity with the Federal Republic.
