In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany. The visit was characterized by jubilant crowds who greeted the President along the route of travel. The scene shows one of the motorcades in which Kennedy traveled together with Chancellor Konrad Adenauer through densely lined streets. The background of the trip was the Cold War and the Berlin Wall, which had existed since 1961; Kennedy’s visit was regarded as a visible sign of American solidarity with the Federal Republic.
