In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy traveled to Germany for a four-day state visit. The photograph shows a motorcade with motorcycle escort, accompanied by dense crowds of people and rows of American and German flags. Such reception scenes repeated themselves at several stations of the journey—from Cologne and Bonn via Frankfurt to West Berlin. The background of the visit was the Cold War and the transatlantic alliance in the shadow of the Berlin Wall, erected in 1961.
