The Stachus (officially Karlsplatz) is one of Munich’s central squares, located immediately behind the Karlstor. On 29 April 1945, units of the US 7th Army — led by the legendary 42nd Infantry Division (“Rainbow”) and the 45th Infantry Division (“Thunderbird”) — reached Munich’s city center. The former Nazi “Capital of the Movement” was taken with almost no resistance. When US troops entered the city, the square became one of the first sites of open encounters with the population. The images are part of the US Army Signal Corps film documentation of the liberation of Munich.
