Unveiled in 1850, the Bavaria statue at the Theresienwiese is one of Munich’s most prominent landmarks. Under National Socialism, the adjacent meadow was a regular venue for mass rallies and Nazi propaganda events. The arrival of the US 7th Army — the Rainbow Division (42nd) and Thunderbird Division (45th) — on 29/30 April 1945 ended this era in Munich. The city, declared “Capital of the Movement” by the National Socialists, came under Allied control within hours and with minimal combat.
