The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was one of the most important fighter-bomber types of the United States Army Air Forces in Western Europe. Following the landing in Normandy in June 1944, P-47 units operated from makeshift airfields immediately behind the front lines and undertook missions of tactical air support for Allied ground forces. Jack Lieb captured this scene on Kodachrome color film — at a time when comparable material from this period survives almost exclusively in black and white.
