The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was among the most important fighter aircraft of the United States Army Air Forces in the Western campaign. At the invasion front in Normandy, beginning in June 1944, it undertook tasks of tactical air support — low-level attacks on German troops, supply lines, and infrastructure — and contributed significantly to Allied air superiority. Jack Lieb captured this daily operations scene at one of the rapidly constructed airfields behind the front as one of the few color photographs of this phase.
