The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was one of the most important fighter and ground-attack aircraft of the USAAF during the Normandy campaign of 1944. It performed escort missions for Allied bombers as well as tactical close air support for Allied ground troops during their advance following the landing in Normandy. Jack Lieb captured this everyday operations at advanced airfields in his private Kodachrome film material — footage that documents this same period in color, a time otherwise preserved exclusively in black and white.
