In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany—a central event during the Cold War. Federal President Heinrich Lübke was among the German statesmen who accompanied Kennedy on portions of his journey. The visit served to reaffirm the German-American partnership and solidarity with the divided city of West Berlin, two years after the construction of the Berlin Wall.
