U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin from June 23 to 26, 1963. The photograph shows him in an open vehicle, presumably during one of the numerous motorcades that accompanied his visit. The population received Kennedy along the route with great enthusiasm. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and Western solidarity with the divided city of Berlin.
