During his visit to Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy also inspected American armed forces stationed in Germany. The visit to U.S. Army units underscored the military presence of the United States in West Germany as a central element of NATO defense during the Cold War. The stationing of American troops in the Federal Republic was a visible sign of the alliance commitment to West Germany and West Berlin, which Kennedy repeatedly emphasized during his journey.
