During U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany in June 1963, dense crowds lined the streets in many places. The photograph shows a typical scene from the reception: spectators crowd behind barriers, police forces secure the corridor, while an open vehicle of the motorcade passes. Kennedy’s journey through the Federal Republic took place in the context of the Cold War and Western solidarity with Germany; public enthusiasm was extraordinarily great in all the cities visited.
