In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall in 1961. Along the route of travel, the population received Kennedy with extraordinary enthusiasm; motorcades and densely packed crowds characterized the image of the state visit. The photograph shows such a scene—an open vehicle in the midst of a jubilant crowd, secured by police and security forces.
