During his visit to Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy was received by large crowds throughout the country. The photograph shows a densely packed crowd behind police barriers following the visit of the American President. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and the construction of the Berlin Wall erected in 1961, and held high symbolic significance for the West German population as a sign of American solidarity.
