During U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany in June 1963, hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets at the various stations of the journey. The dense crowd, secured by police barriers, reflected the extraordinary enthusiasm of the West German population. Kennedy’s visit took place in the context of the Cold War and the ongoing tension between East and West following the construction of the Wall in 1961. It was regarded as a demonstrative symbol of American solidarity with the Federal Republic of Germany.
