In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy traveled through the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall erected in 1961. Kennedy delivered several public speeches during the trip, including one at the Frankfurt Paulskirche and before the Schöneberg Town Hall in West Berlin. The photograph shows him at the lectern, surrounded by representatives of official protocol.
