In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy undertook a four-day state visit to the Federal Republic of Germany, which took place in the context of the Cold War. The photograph shows Kennedy at a lectern with microphones, surrounded by dignitaries. Kennedy’s journey took him to Cologne, Bonn, Frankfurt, and finally to West Berlin, where he spoke on June 26 in front of the Schöneberg Town Hall. The visit was regarded as a strong signal of American solidarity with the Federal Republic and West Berlin.
