On June 25, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited Frankfurt, where he delivered a speech in the Paulskirche. At Paulsplatz, immediately in front of the Paulskirche, a large crowd gathered to receive the President. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the wall in 1961 and met with extraordinary enthusiasm among the West German population.
