In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and the Berlin Wall, erected in 1961. Kennedy gave several public speeches during his journey, including one at the Frankfurt Paulskirche and—as the highlight—on June 26 in front of the Schöneberg Town Hall in West Berlin. The photograph shows Kennedy at a lectern during one of the official appearances of his visit to Germany.
