In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy traveled to Germany for a multi-day state visit. Air Force One with tail number 26000—a Boeing VC-137C—was the presidential transport aircraft that accompanied Kennedy on all legs of the journey. The photograph shows the arrival scene at an airport; a reception committee had gathered on the tarmac. The visit took place during the Cold War and was regarded as a strong signal of American solidarity with the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin.
